giffgaff and plastic from the ocean

By: jeremylalou | 05-11-2019 20:16

A charity called "Parley" has created a system where plastics are recaptured from oceans around the world, and turned into a premium alternative to new “virgin” plastic, thus reducing waste and helping to clean up the oceans.

Their plastic is used by companies like American Express and Adidas.

Maybe something for giffgaff to look into? I believe the SIM cards are made of plastic?

How did I come up with the idea? I browsed the internet.

Still a great idea, any plastic removed from the ocean is a good thing.

Love the idea, reducing plastic will have a greater impact on the environment as it will also increase the habitats, and less extinction of the animals. As for the companies they're implementing the scuba divers, other people and students can help reduce waste which will lead to a better impact to the environment around the sea animals.

Valid currently supply some of GiffGaff's SIMs. They also produce Valid Green SIMs which offer a far more eco-friendly alternative (I believe they're biodegradable). Maybe these could be looked into?

once up small scale attempts of manifacturing could be attempted. depending on where giffgaff in present mostcould apply for grants to reduce the start up cost for switching to greener practices.

related considerations could be users posting old sims back or working with fairphone as collective marketing.

Fully in favour of this idea. Anything to reduce the amount of new plastic going into circulation and ultimately ending up in the environment is worth it in my view. It would increase Giffgaff's green credentials too which can only be a good thing.

Absolutley love this idea maybe we could spead this and work with the phone manufacturers aswell. could even add an incentive for customers to hand in old/ unwanted phones and recieve top up credit for recycling?!

love this idea, companies need to be doing more to reduce waste and their impact on the environment.

While this is a GREAT!!!!! Idea in my opinion, as both a SCUBA diver and as an engineering student, we need to apply this pressure to the actual SIM manufactures themselves. However a fatter target for this idea would be the phone manufactures as well ie. Sony, Eriksson, motorola, Samsung (the biggest target) and Apple. To name a few. We could through Giff Gaff push these companies into the green sector by using our buying power en mass to get them to use recycled plastic

Well done by the way in case I wasn't clear that this is a wonderful idea

Yep, this would be a great feather in GG's cap, epscially given their presumed market share

Brilliant idea. Anything that helps our environment has to be good, right!
