Eco Friendly Sims

By: davidgbartlett | 24-07-2019 13:23

What steps are giffgaff taking to be more eco friendly, environmentally conscious and reduce CO footprint? We all know this is a current issue in our day.

My suggestion is for giffgaff to jump on this band wagon and promote itself as a 'green' network provider, to gain rapport with the public and access more potential customers.

However to do this, it needs to make changes.

How about changing the way sims are packaged? I would not be referring to the paper part, which is recyclable, but the plastic frame around the sim. Could giffgaff explore options to remove this and use another medium which is recyclable, such as card? How this would work would need trial and testing.

Thanks for reading.

I am passionate about the environment, climate change, and recycling.

giffgaff has come a long way in this area as the sims were in bigger more bulkier casings back in the day and then to the 3-in-1 packaging.

Unless you are talking about the actual material used for the sims, there is only a tiny bit smaller it can go but I guess that still counts.

Only solution is Esims but that would be people getting compatible phones which means another phone having to be recycled and think about recycling a phone to a sim and the costs etc. Goes on and on.

Only gripe I have with giffgaff in this area is how much sims people are ordering and sending to phished addresses etc that never gets used and goes staring into bins. But again how can they police that? I am aware there are limits but people are abusing it.

A non-plastic frame might not be possible, but making it smaller probably is.

It would, however, likely mean re-tooling the production line, which would have some environmental cost which may or may not be recovered over time.

I think your idea is good in principle, but am not convinced it will work in practice.
