Static IP for Data SIM (Disaster Recovery)

By: greenwood_it | 12-10-2018 08:14

The "Always On" package is great for Disaster Recovery - if you loose your broadband, you throw in a 4G USB Dongle and activate a SIM and you're back online immediately.

This works fine for web browsing and webmail etc, but businesses often need inbound connectivity for websites, VPNs, and email servers etc, which can't be supported with the current SIM setup.

How about adding an optional "Static IP Address" to the order for a "couple of quid more", or creating a "Disaster Recovery" bundle (more data and a static IP) for a premium?

BT offer a 4G dongle for broadband resilience (using an EE SIM) but it's locked and only works with a BT router - which is rubbish for businesses.

I have mine for failover home use - never made a call and never will. It's just on a dongle plumbed into to my firewall.

If my internet drops out I have configured rules to send work traffic like VPN and VoIP desk phone over the 3G (old dongle) instead.

I must admit we do the same thing at work with remote sites, but we do have business vodafone sims for those and I wouldn't expect the same sort of thing from giffgaff, I think this one is out of their reach, but we can dream.

I wouldn't need that now either, but possibly in the future could be a nice thing to have available.

Good idea and well set out. The only flaw is giffgaff is a personal use service and for business

Maybe that would open it up for new markets.
