Static IP for Data SIM (Disaster Recovery)

By: greenwood_it | 12-10-2018 08:14

The "Always On" package is great for Disaster Recovery - if you loose your broadband, you throw in a 4G USB Dongle and activate a SIM and you're back online immediately.

This works fine for web browsing and webmail etc, but businesses often need inbound connectivity for websites, VPNs, and email servers etc, which can't be supported with the current SIM setup.

How about adding an optional "Static IP Address" to the order for a "couple of quid more", or creating a "Disaster Recovery" bundle (more data and a static IP) for a premium?

BT offer a 4G dongle for broadband resilience (using an EE SIM) but it's locked and only works with a BT router - which is rubbish for businesses.

Hmm, mobile internet is not a guaranteed service so it's use as a disaster recovery route would be dubious.

Currently giffgaff's mobile internet service it not meant as a replacement for landline broadband - it's meant for people to be able to access the internet whilst out and about. Also giffgaff's terms preclude the use of its SIMs for businesses:

"3.5. Your use of the Services must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes."

The network is not designed for the type of usage that business requires. Business packages cost more because they will include Quality of Service guarantees. This has a negative impact on GG's network, with negliible benefits for GG.

At first I thought what a good idea, then I remembered how unreliable my internet connection has been over this past year. Giffgaff is a great network for private use, but I feel if I ran a business they would have a long way to go to meet those needs. I think they would do better to focus on this problem before considering your suggestion.By the way I do realise that connections speeds vary.

another thing to bear in mind is that GG is for personal use only, and folks are not meant to use it for business use.

Great idea. It is very unique and as the industry moves towards mobile broadband as a convenience factor. I think this idea will come about as a very futurist idea.

Supported :)
