As a long time member of GG and trying to bring extra members on board (with limited success to be fair) I would like to point out that the basic principle of running a company is of course to generate profit.
Having said that I also appreciate the tag line for GG is "Free to go" "Free to stay" but to hold on to Customers and stop churn is the holy grail surely?
There is a fair amount of competition at the entry point of the market and there are a lot of favourable sim only deals available from the increased competition from newer virtual carriers like ID and Plusnet.
The deal on the £5 goody bag with 100mb of data is the lowest I have seen and was not increased at the last round of 'improved goody bags' from the company.
I am struggling to keep my friend on board now and if she goes I too might look at the alternatives. For example look here: https://www.plus.net/mobile/plans/sim-only/
In essence I would like to propose that you increase the data to at least 200mb month on the £5 deal as it stands it is at least 5 times worse (or more in my case as I am a Plusnet BB customer so I would get 1 gigabyte plus an extra 100 mins for the same outlay.)
The only real tangible benefit to the company would be a higher profile in the comparison sites marketing bringing the giffgaff brand into more prominence. At one time on "Moneysavingexpert" you had good publicity because of your offers that have deteriorated over the years in a fast paced constantly evolving marketplace. (This site is a uk top 60 site)
Please give due consideration to my suggestion.
