When logging into giffgaff.com there should be an option to enable 2 step verification to make your account more secure and you would receive a SMS with a code to verifi that it is you.
I am totally in favour of improving our security but equally well get the"more than I would want when I log in to a PAYG phone account"
Therefore I think you had it spot on by the addition of the"Optional" in the description.
Should be available for those who feel they need it but not compulsory for them that don't care

Great idea, security is very important.
However, would it be better to send the code as an email instead of by text in case the reason you are trying to log in is because there is a problem with you phone which you are trying to get support for. If this was the case, you might not be able to receive SMS messages.
your member name is publicly visible and anyone could try to guess your password it is just to add an extra layer of security as every other company is doing it.
