speedtest for free on limited data packages

By: cim | 23-04-2014 13:33

A simple proposal: allow people on limited data packages to run speedtest for free instead of having to use some of the limited data allowance.

Why should giffgaff do this for us?

Lately 3G data can be slow at times and trying to evaluate speed against location, time of day etc uses up some of a member's data allowance while running tests.

4G is about to be launched as a trial - and the first thing many people will be wanting to do is test speeds. With a limited 1GB per month, if you run say one speedtest per day that alone will use more or less the whole 1GB in a month! (based on reports of speedtest 4G using 30MB per test)

Usually speedtest is run due to possible service issues so I think this would be a nice thing to offer. What to you think?

Doesn't have to be speedtest specifically but that seems to be the most popular

Could limit to say first 1 test per day free on speedtest to prevent excessive use

Apparently mobile speedtest uses < 10MB on 3G but around 30MB on 4G testing

Edit - if gg can collect the speed test data e.g. via the iOS and Android apps and make use of this data e.g. to improve service quality then so much the better.

Totally support this idea, plus can collect Lon/lat or cell Id connected and create your own speed test or integrate with other providers who collect speed tests for the fee in return.

Sorry can't go along with that, some people would be doing speed testing all day and night and then complaining about the speeds on the community.

could be limited no more then 1 test in 5 minutes and pretty sure there will be not that many people to even have an effect on the network.
