Give out free SIM cards at Heathrow arrivals

By: nfh | 02-04-2014 10:49

When I landed at Heathrow Terminal 5 last week, I saw this vending machine for SIM cards in the baggage reclaim hall at arrivals. Giffgaff should find a way to distribute its SIM cards either from this machine or for free from somewhere else near to it in order to avoid losing business on visitors to the UK. Perhaps there is an opportunity for giffgaff to do this in the new Terminal 2 which will open on 18th June.

Hi, welcome to the giffgaff Labs.

I notice your idea is a duplicate of something we've had before. You might not be aware, but giffgaff selects ideas to implement based on what gets the most upvotes and not what has been proposed most often — it's not easy to merge duplicate ideas.

What is easy, however, is searching before you post. As you chose not to do that and instead spewed out yet another idea that's been proposed already, you've actually made it less likely that either idea will be implemented by splitting the votes between the two.

Next time, please think about searching and supporting existing ideas.

The cost of having machines in London stations that are linked to a network that will recognise unique pin numbers to distribute a sim card... I think this would not be cost effective.  Also, this would make it very difficult for any recruits and sim activations to be tracked unless the machine also made a record of the sim activation code on the sim provided and sent that back to giffgaff staff to update your recruits page.

Sorry but struggle to see how this could benefit giffgaff without great expense.  Maybe just order a few sims rather than 1 next time.

There are plenty of existing ways for members to get sim cards sent abroad, hand delivered or posted in advance to their destination, some similar ideas about airports, stations and hotels etc if you want to add your thoughts and support (including one being looked into by giffgaff)

Which ideas are selected for consideration and their chances of success depend on the number of votes they get, therefore posting copies which dilute the available votes only reduce the ideas chances of being introduced.

To vote for an Idea is more powerful than posting the same Idea again (you can search to see if your Idea is already out there here)  https://labs.giffgaff.com/how

You can stand at Heathrow yourself and hand SIMs out!

Awesome idea why not have a counter where you could get a free SIM and have it installed in your phone for free

A good idea, particularly if the nuance 'tlcshop' on 21Nov suggested is included. A £10 SIM offering 500 minutes, unlimited texts, and 1GB of UK data for 30 days - whats not to like? Of course there would be a likelyhood of quite a few of the foreigners never using their balance to the full, so I don't think tere is any need to charge them £1 extra to cover the cost of the vending machine. And presumably they will get an additional £5 of credit when they activate the SIM, I would think that the take-up would be very high.

I don't support this. If someone wants to stand outside Heathrow Arrivals, then they can do it themselves!

Charge an extra £1 or so for these sim topups when PayPal is used to cover costs, most of the tourists would be here short term, using the sims 2-3 weeks then binning them...
